Craft Ideas Fashion: Rhinestone flip flops tutorial

Strolling through the mall this past weekend I saw lots and lots of what I'd call fancy flip flops. They were all differently adored with beads, studs and rhinestones but there was one common thread connecting them all. They cost far more than I'm willing to spend on a pair of flip flops.

So I dug through my solid bargain bin flip flops (I practically buy them in bulk at the beginning of the season when they are easy to find) and went sifting through my craft stash until I found the perfect embellishment. Rhinestone chain.

Not going to lie, these flippers are awesome. I liked them so much that I put them on promptly without making sure that the glue dried. Which wound up being a bit of a mistake. But I've gotta say, these suckers are cute!

For this project you will need:

Measure and cut your chain based on a quick wrap around on your flip flop straps. If in doubt, cut a stone or two more than you think you need.

Now my straps were really thick and I wanted the look of thinner ones so I simply used my scissors to trim them the way I wanted them.

Use your glue to affix the chain onto the strap. I found it worked best if I glued on in small lengths, about 1-2 inches. When the stones were fairly well set, I'd let go and glue down another 1-2 inches.

Now you could technically quit at the previous step, but having the little metal bits in between the stones visible is going to drive me nuts. That's why I chose to cover it with yarn.

You can also use floss, paracord, twine, anything really. Take a really long piece, around 3 meters long, and matchup the ends to find the middle. Take and glue that middle bit onto the backside of your first rhinestone.

Carefully wind the cord around each stone gluing as necessary to keep in place. Work a few inches at a time and allow to dry in between.

And sorry for my incredibly grungy hands. That's glue and some tie dyed nail beds!

Wrap your second end of your cord around each stone in the opposite direction.

Once you get to the end, glue the cord down well and when dry trim the excess.

To be sure that your cord doesn't come undone, take a small bit of glue on a wood skewer, toothpick or something similar and rub it in between each stone. This is going to glue your cord down and prevent it from unravelling.

The yarn I used is really, really soft which also makes it have a wispy quality. If needed, trim up any wispy bits to clean  up the straps.

And that right there is all she wrote! I like that because the shoes are white the stones don't stand out too terribly much making them both casual and dressy. They do remind me of something a bride would wear in between photos or something!

And a word to the wise, let these suckers dry completely before dancing around the house. Happy hump day!
